Arguably the biggest news on Monday came from the South Pole. Scientists working at the BICEP2 collaboration announced the first clear sign of gravitational waves, “found in maps of the earliest light emitted after the big bang.” These appear in Albert Einstein’s theory of general relativity, but had never before been detected.
